Since China has adopted open-door policy in the early 1980s, the country has experienced tremendous changes in all aspects of life. In the 1990s, China has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its entry to the World Trade Organization has further intensified its interaction with the global community. China’s economic success has, however, often overshadowed the political, social and cultural changes that have been taking place in the past two decades. Many people in the West who have limited experience of or knowledge about contemporary china continue to view it as an Oriental mystery or an unchanging cultural tradition. Perhaps it is the time for this most populous nation on earth to be understood: its people, its culture, and its history.
